  Pro-JW letter to the editor in local paper

  this letter to the editor appeared in today's paper: http://www.monticellotimes.com/articles/2009/04/16/opinion/letters_to_the_editor/851witness.txt.

  this is basically a response to the article that was published about me and my family (which, frustratingly, has already been archived).

  in it, i claimed to shunned by almost all friends and family and to have been neither df'd nor da'd (both of these claims are true, by the way).

  This is basically a response to the article that was published about me and my family (which, frustratingly, has already been archived). In it, I claimed to shunned by almost all friends and family and to have been neither DF'd nor DA'd (both of these claims are true, by the way).

  I find it fascinating that Derek, the letter's author, was able to dwell only on the positive: yes, there are a lot of JWs & yes, they are respectful to people with differing opinions (as long as you count excommunication as respectful). Still, he marginalizes the shunning and ignores the main thrust of my article.

  I used to be in the same congregation as Derek. He's a good kid, he was a real thinker - he read lots of non-fiction. I hope he comes to his senses one day.

  Comments are allowed at the letter's site...the editor told me he wished to hear more feedback. Any takers?

  Thanks, everyone.

  Yeah, I like the last sentence of the article, too (is that patting myself on the back? sorry) - it gives the reader something to do. Also, if a JW does read it, they'll think "Oh, crap, this article might come back to haunt me when I'm out in service."

  My birthday = June 11

  My son's = May 14 (he'll be 4 - the article got his age wrong)

  It's a pretty good article, but he got my son's age wrong - we celebrated his SECOND birthday. And he's 3 now, not two.

  wobble - Bob and I are both from Minnesota, but alas, no relation (no close relation, anyway - he might be my ninth cousin or something like that).

  Isaac- if you live in NYC, you should DEFINITELY get something into the local papers.

  How many different kinds of land animals are there in the World? (Noah)

  i just wonder if 2 of each kind of all the land animals can fit the ark?

  do you know how big the ark was?

  maybe someone should try to bring 2 animals of each kind in the ark to see if it is possible.

  Mammal species alone are estimated to be ~4,000. This is an interesting number to use, because, unlike insects, the Watchtower Society actually states how many mammal pairs they believe were on the ark: 43. That means, in the 4,377 years since the Flood, the number of mammal species has gone from 43 to 4,000. This is about 16,000 times faster than the rate at which biologists believe mammals have evolved, yet the Watchtower Society dismisses evolution as impossible.

  Robert O'dell D.O, Anyone know him......

  he and his late wife ellen.

  he was the congregation overseer in mentor oh in the late 60's.

  they had 2 kids robert and leann.he left ohio in the 70's and moved to north carolina in some overseer position.

  I knew him.

  He was one of the instructors at my pioneer school (in the Twin Cities area). His wife died about a week before school started, so he was gone more often than he was there. A local elder (the substitute CO) took over for Bob when he couldn't make it to class.

  I also had some contact with him when rehearsing for a couple of District Convention interviews.
